Tear Me Open
“Tear Me Open” was inspired by the immoral history of human anatomical dissections. In the past, bodies used for dissection were often criminals or poor people who did not offer consent. Some even used bodies stolen from graves or murdered for the sole purpose of being sold for dissection. These immoral acts were justified by touting the scientific advancements gained and claiming that those being dissected were being punished for their sins or were less than human.
This piece leans into the visceral nature of dissection with exaggerated and distorted forms. The pose is agonized and expressive. The colors are bright and eye-catching, drawing attention to the form and adding drama while distracting from the grotesque nature of the decaying body. These clashing elements symbolize the struggle between the advancement of scientific knowledge and morality. The head and jaw are disconnected from the body and are skeletal with no defining features, recalling the dehumanization of many people used for dissection, the lack of respect for their individuality, and their inability to offer consent or speak out.
