Ritual

“Ritual” evokes a spiritual and religious atmosphere. The bronze of the hands makes them monumental and luxurious, while the patina hints towards decay over time. The candles, each burned to a different length, symbolize the passage of time and hint towards a religious significance. The placement of the candles mirrors the stigmata, or wounds in Christ’s hands, and the flowing red wax is similar to blood. The candles each have protruding thorns, calling back to the crown of thorns worn by Jesus. The sculpture speaks of the passage of time, the inevitability of death, and people’s response in searching for higher meaning and religion as a form of comfort against the unknown.
